Behold Big Mister Doom

Big Mister Doom, an electronica duo based in Leeds, sent me over a couple of tracks this week. These are some fresh, glitchy and atmospheric tunes—similar in style to Telefon Tel Aviv and Eskmo. Turn the volume way up to enjoy crystal clear production and heaps of swirling beats and bleeps.

Fore more info. and music downloads, check out Big Mister Doom.

MP3 1: Big Mister Doom – Avant
MP3 2: Eskimo Twins – Judas (Big Mister Doom Remix)

New Amon Tobin Album Pushes Boundaries

Amon Tobin’s long awaited new album will once again reinvent what is possible with sound and music. Here’s an excerpt about the upcoming album from amontobin.com:

“Amon is hunkered down in his studio deep in the redwoods of Northern Californian and has begun work on a new album. In addition to researching and developing new production tools and techniques of his own, he’s ensconced himself in a whole new array of gadgetry from the past and the future that will help continue to push the boundaries of what is possible with sound and music. Tour dates and outside projects have been put on the back burner for now – Amon recently turned down a lucrative high profile scoring opportunity amongst other things—in order to focus solely on what can best be described as an auditory space walk.”

Album Review: Architect – Consume Adapt Create

architect-album-consume-adapt-createConsume Adapt Create has been Daniel Myer’s largest and most successful departure from industrial and EBM since Haujobb’s 1999 album, Ninetynine. This latest release from Myer’s Architect project is a contemporary fusion of dark breaks, drum & bass, hardcore and dubstep. While Myer should be praised for masking any influences in previous work—including prior Architect releases—it’s refreshing to compare these new tracks to other artists. “So I Went Out” is reminiscent of something off a Broken Note release, while “The Beauty and the Beat (Rokka)” takes cues from artists like Enduser, Dieselboy and Silent Witness. Beneath these influences though, lies a core of solid arrangement, unique soundscapes, heavily distorted basslines and complex beats.

To further appreciate Consume Adapt Create, check out these other notable releases from Myer: Haujobb – Solutions for a Small Planet, Haujobb – Ninetynine, Haujobb – Vertical Theory, Destroid – Silent World, Architect – Galactic Supermarket and Clear Vision – Deception. Check Discogs and Wikipedia for a full (and ridiculously extensive) discography.  ~ tom

MP3 1: Attack Ships on Fire
MP3 2: So I Went Out
MP3 3: The Beauty and the Beat (Rokka)

New Killer Tracks from Starkey

As far as progressive DJs in Philadelphia go, Starkey is at the top of the list. Unfortunately, our numbers have been dwindling ever since we lost Dieselboy to Brooklyn. Starkey’s latest releases, “Knob Twiddler,” “Rain City” and “Beatingz” are fluorescent dubstep stompers. The production is tight, the sound is huge and the melodies are dynamic and emotional. Don’t rely on earbuds for these tracks, put on some quality headphones and turn up the volume.  ~ tom

Starkey is currently on tour in the UK, Netherlands and Germany. Check him out if you get the chance—his sets are sick. To hear more, visit Starkey on iTunes.

MP3 1: Starkey – Knob Twiddler
MP3 2: Starkey – Rain City

Luke Vibert – We Hear You

We Hear You is one of my favorite albums from 2009. If you think you’re unfamiliar with Luke Vibert, maybe you’ve heard of Plug, Wagon Christ, The Ace of Clubs, Kerrier District or Spac Hand Luke—all aliases he’s released material under. We Hear You is a fun, diverse album blending elements from hip hop, house, acid techno, disco and more contemporary styles like dubstep. Since I already missed the boat on a timely review, I’ll skip right to the tunes. Better late than never.  ~ tom

South West Four 2010 Headliners Announced

Everyone’s been trying to figure out who’s headlining this years’ biggest dance party in London. The wait is over. On Saturday, August 28th 2010, Armin van Buuren will be the guest of honor. South West Four will be his only show in London this year so you need to grab tickets early if you want to see the “most popular DJ on the planet.”

On Sunday, August 29th, Fatboy Slim will close out the South West Four weekend. This will be his only 2010 London show as well and guaranteed to be one hell of a DJ set. Other DJs/producers to have headlined in the past include Sasha, John Digweed, Paul van Dyk and Carl Cox.

Tickets go on sale in London sometime between 9 AM and 2 PM on Tuesday February 23rd. Different sources have different times so I’d be sure to be up around 8:30 to get your orders in immediately.

Check back tomorrow and later in the week for a full list of over 70 DJ/producers in the South West Four 2010 lineup. For ticketing information and artist updates, visit www.southwestfour.com  ~ tom

Emalkay Produces an Explosive Faithless Remix

We don’t normally post downloadable tracks but since this one is so huge, we had to. Emalkay absolutely kills it! It’s great to see a young producer breathing new life into such a classic band. The original “Sun to Me” was released on iTunes as a free download for one week in December, but the window has closed and it’s now only available in the UK. “Sun to Me” is a teaser single paving the way for the full return of Faithless in 2010.
