It’s always refreshing to hear something raw and gritty to remember electronic music doesn’t have to be so rigid.

In 1977, Damon Edge, Helios Creed, John Lambdin and Garry Spain fused together distorted guitars & vocals, TV samples, Moogs and violins to form Chrome—one of the pioneers of industrial music. It wasn’t until they released their 1978 album, Alien Soundtracks, that the true sound of Chrome was born. Their avant-garde experimentation with distortion and tape manipulation (similar to that of Throbbing Gristle’s) helped lay the foundation for the early industrial sound.

For further listening, check out Throbbing Gristle, Nurse with Wound, The Birthday Party, Einsturzende Neubauten, Coil and early Skinny Puppy.

Although I couldn’t get a hold of my favorite tune on the release, the two tracks posted are pretty sick. They remind me of cEven Key/Download albums from the late 90s/early 2000s. Any seasoned rivethead should know what I’m talking about. Here’s the note from Chris:

“Moogulator and Enzym, two true analogue loyalists share wax!

On the latest release on Aentitainment Records, the two german producers are playing the whole claviature of their machine’s possibilities creating a modern and timeless sounding record of spastic beats and Bladerunner-ish micromelodies.

Notoriously, the label “handmade in Germany” stands for a high level of quality and dedication during the production. As we have two musicians here who actually work on hardware (physical machines!) this catchphrase fits perfectly. To honour and to preserve this rare species of artists we’re glad about the consolidation of these two live-electronic ambassadors.

As we’re well aware about the fact that such music is best heard live, we’ll give you the next best solution, serving a hot plate of shiny red wax that should easily win over the heart of each friend of advanced electronics.”

Check out http://aentitainment.com to hear samples from the entire release.

MP3 2: Moogulator – Errorism

This latest release from Myer’s Architect project is a contemporary fusion of dark breaks, drum & bass, hardcore and dubstep. While Myer should be praised for masking any influences in previous work—including prior Architect releases—it’s refreshing to compare these new tracks to other artists. “So I Went Out” is reminiscent of something off a Broken Note release, while “The Beauty and the Beat (Rokka)” takes cues from artists like Enduser, Dieselboy and Silent Witness. Beneath these influences though, lies a core of solid arrangement, unique soundscapes, heavily distorted basslines and complex beats.

Try and Imagine pure evil as a living force that feeds on life, death, murder and pain. This evil infiltrates a city, tainting the air, water and streets. As its power grows, so does fear, corruption, agony and hysteria. For all those unfortunate enough to live here, death is imminent. Let the Night Roar is the soundtrack to this story—down to the details of crime, punishment and the true face of evil—which is unmasked throughout this imaginatively dark and devastating debut LP from King Cannibal.

Let the Night Roar is hands down the hardest release from Ninja Tune Records to date. Trailing far behind are The Bug’s London Zoo and Amon Tobin’s 2004 release, Chaos Theory. LTNR is a seamless blend of dancehall, industrial, drum & bass and dubstep that continually builds with tension even when the beats slow down and drop out. The stage is set with an intro of eerie atmospheres and the words “You’ve got about one hour to think about what you’ve done to me.” Because of repeating sounds, themes and frequent movie samples—including the explosive speech by George C. Scott in Exorcist III—it’s hard to not think of this album as conceptual.

As cool as the hard beats and unrelenting bass lines are, the MCs steal the show. “Murder Us” features deep and dark vocals by Jahcoozi woven around train-like percussion, alarming synth stabs and gun shots. The layered rapid fire vocals by Face-A-Face on “Virgo,” are absolutely sick (this track is so dope). On the voodoo-like track, “Dirt,” legendary Ragga/Hip-Hop artist Daddy Freddy adds violence and fear with repetitive screams.

The intoxicating dubstep single, “So… Embrace the Minimum” is set close to the middle of the album to momentarily break the tension with warm bass effects and rhythms—but don’t let your guard down, it doesn’t last long. Other highlights include “Aragami Style” and “Colder Still,” which fuel the album with threatening beats, distorted bass, ghostly pads and unforgettable breaks. “Flower of Flesh and Blood” concludes the record with a battle between good and evil where the true face of the beast is revealed… 303-style acid bass! It’s heavy, dark and best heard from beginning to end. Definitely one of the best albums of the year. ~ tom

Two unreleased tracks, “Downtime” and “Stone Tape Theory,” were recorded during the LTNR sessions but didn’t fit the feel of the record. This 2-track single will be released on November 16th. Check out myspace.com/kingcannibal for samples and tour dates. Let the Night Roar and a ton of other King Cannibal tracks and remixes are available now on iTunes.

Since we typically review new music at Sawtooth, I wanted to honor some electronic music of the past with occasional Sawtooth mixes. This first mix is a collection of tracks from the past 15 years encompassing trip-hop, breaks, electro, ambient, tech-house, industrial, downtempo, future jazz, glitch, post-punk, trance and some mixed styles. Among these selections are some tracks that I feel never got the credit they deserved such as FFWD and the Nine Inch Nails remix track “The Downward Spiral (The Bottom),” which was remixed by members of Coil—an experimental industrial group who helped shape the genre. The remixes on Further Down the Spiral include some of the best remixes I’ve ever heard. If you’re only familiar with the major NIN releases, you’re in for a surprise. They’re incredible works of sound manipulation, dynamics and composition. FFWD was an ambient supergroup made up of Thomas Fehlmann (Sun Electric), Robert Fripp, and Kris Weston & Dr. Alex Paterson of The Orb. This 1994 release was their only collaboration. Another highlight is Funki Porcini’s “16 Megatons.” This track comes from Fast Asleep, which is my all-time favorite downtempo album.

If you like any particular styles, leave a comment and I’ll do my best to incorporate more of it in my future posts. I’d like to get more reader participation on Sawtooth so if there’s something you’d like to see us do differently, please share. Enjoy the tunes! ~ tom

Trent Reznor announced that this will be the final tour. In addition to getting engaged to Mariqueen Maandig, the singer of West Indian Girl, he had been thinking of calling it quits for some time now, but decided to give it one last go for the 20 year anniversary of his first album, Pretty Hate Machine. And what better band to go on tour with than Janes Addiction? Both bands got their start around the same time playing the first Lollapalooza show in 1992.

This final tour “Wave Goodbye” is a must see for old fans. The show is raw and spontaneous and the energy of the band is through the roof. They’re performing many of the songs they never got a chance to play before including “Heresy,” “The Downward Spiral,” “Mr. Self Destruct,” “Metal,” “Physical,” “I’m Afraid of Americans,” “The Becoming,” “The Way Out Is Through” and “Last.” Since the set-list changes up every night, fans are attending as many shows as they can afford. Janes Addiction then close out the night with an explosive performance. Unfortunately, the US tour is almost over. Tomorrow the band is performing at the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, MD. Tickets are still on sale so I’ll probably catch this one too. Then, my youth will officially feel over. I think we can all sympathize with nin.com forum member, Shitfuckdamn, who posted “Might as well named it the ‘Goodbye Forever and Get Your Razor Blades Out’ tour.”

Yesterday, I tracked down a few songs from Marilyn Manson’s upcoming 15-track album, The High End of Low. Manson seems to be back to his normal, outspoken and angry self. The tracks are harder and crunchier once again, but still lack the amount of synths that I’d prefer. These songs resemble those from Antichrist, Mechanical Animals and Holywood. The highlights are the lyrics, catchy riffs and a raw energy that Eat Me, Drink Me lacked. Even though they’re not doing anything new musically, I was excited to post a track.

The band will begin their world tour on June 3rd to promote the May 26th release. MP3 versions and a Deluxe CD version are available for preorder at Amazon.
