Kollektiv Turmstrasse – Rebellion Der Traumer

Rebellion Der Traumer Cover ArtRebellion Der Traumer, the latest album by Kollektiv Turmstrasse, is a departure from their previous minimal tech-house releases which both reflects their development over the years and proves that true artistry is in the ability to reinvent and grow.

Rebellion Der Traumer begins with the soft melodies and thin percussive bursts from “Affekt.” Over time, the songs become richer with drums, vocals, piano melodies, stringed instruments and organic atmospheres. Between the 10 full compositions are minute-long ambient interludes—all beautiful on their own—that serve as fluid transitions from song to song.

Rebellion Der Traumer is best heard from beginning to end. To catch and appreciate all the sonic details, listen with headphones or high quality monitors. Trash the speaker docks.

MP3 2: Kollektiv Turmstrasse – Uneins
MP3 3: Kollektiv Turmstrasse – Goldmarie

Emalkay Produces an Explosive Faithless Remix

We don’t normally post downloadable tracks but since this one is so huge, we had to. Emalkay absolutely kills it! It’s great to see a young producer breathing new life into such a classic band. The original “Sun to Me” was released on iTunes as a free download for one week in December, but the window has closed and it’s now only available in the UK. “Sun to Me” is a teaser single paving the way for the full return of Faithless in 2010.

Artist Spotlight – Dominik Eulberg

dominik-eulbergGerman DJ/Producer, Dominik Eulberg, is one of the most innovative minimal/techno artists of the decade. Drawing his inspirations and sounds from nature, he creates complex organic arrangements that build and evolve effortlessly. Each sound is treated like a musician in a symphony—weaving in and out of an electronic landscape. At an average of eight minutes, Eulberg’s tracks take on a life of their own—progressing through multiple moods and styles. Most critics that concentrate on his ambient and more organic tracks fail to recognize the darker and dissonant tunes that Eulberg is so great at creating. Conjuring up hard driving beats and warped distorted synths seem like second nature.

Ever since Eulberg stepped foot on the scene, he’s been picking up awards and nominations. Best Newcomer of the Year, Top Producer, Best Remixer, Best Remix, Top DJ—and the list goes on and on. He’s remixed tracks for artists including Hot Chip, Gabriel Ananda, Extrawelt, DJ Hell, Steve Barnes, Roman Flugel and Nathan Fake—many of which received awards. When Eulberg’s not in the studio or above the dance floor, he can be found in the woods observing birds and soaking up new inspirations.  ~ tom

Below are a few original tracks and collaborations. Check out Eulberg on iTunes for more full length albums and remixes.

MP3 1: Dominik Eulberg & Gabriel Ananda – Eucalypse Now!
MP3 2: Dominik Eulberg – Sansula (Oder Der Letzte Grund)
MP3 3: Extrawelt – Was Ubrig Bleibt (Dominik Eulberg’s Das Es Remix)

Round Table Knights: Belly Dance Around The Real Issue

round-table-knights-belly-danceHark thee! Who goes there?! Why it be Round Table Knights! There is no denying the capability and skill of Questionmark and Biru Bee, sworn together as Round Table Knights. It’s not just a play upon words mates and maidens, this Swiss duo is equipped with an impenetrable armor of technical finesse and steely remix mastery. It’s probable your ears have already gnawed on one of their bountiful feasts of techno-inspired turkey legs or sipped from their goblets of electro-romantic spiced cider. This royal DJ/Producer duo have collaborated with many a fellowship. The likes of TTCD, Spankrock, Justice, Coco Rosie, Simian Mobile Disco and the Beastie Boys have requested the collaborative presence of the Round Table Knights to upgrade tracks from squire to sire. Remix discs from 2004 and 2005 made way for the “roundies” first all original 2008 EP, Hold Me Back. Heralding little commercial success but bolstered by inner circle encouragement, Round Table Knights recently released their second EP, Belly Dance. This is no dance marathon with a scant four cuts featuring the stylings of veteran mixer Mowgli. Even his battle-tested skills seem tepid and unenthusiastic when given the deed to remix.

Alas, this fair maiden must bequeeth a tale of forcible woe. Belly Dance is a producers dream and an avid listener’s cat nap. The talent level of the two denounces nightmare status, but conjures a couple culprits as to why their remix success trumps their solo efforts. Do the Round Table Knights feel a need to carve out their own electronic kingdom? Is this duo tired of all for one and prefer to be one for all? Their track record makes perseverating positively a necessity. Belly Dance is more of a belly flop on the marble floors of my court—though my walls still echo with the succulent re-tooling and organic remixes the Knights have relentlessly and flawlessly always provided. They are musical kings upon men and until the battlefield is less fraught with worthy music makers, they should keep practicing the time honored tradition of go with what ye know~ dimes

2009 HARD Electronic Music Festivals

hard-festivalThe U.S. is getting a dose of some good, hard electronic music this fall and winter. DJ Destructo, aka Gary Richards, created HARD in 2007 to showcase the best in new electronic music. Destructo worked with Rick Rubin in the 90s, helping to launch The Lords of Acid, Basement Jaxx, Messiah, David Holmes, Dub Pistols and God Lives Underwater. Now HARD is coming to Los Angeles and New York for 4 nights of crunchy electronic madness.

HARD NYC is the first show on the list with a good blend of dubstep, electro and breakbeat artists. Crookers, Major Lazer, Rusko, Jack Beats and Destructo will be performing at Terminal 5 in NYC on 10/10/09.

The second event, HARD Haunted Mansion, is a 2-day festival in Los Angeles at The Shrine on October 30th and 31st. Artists include: Basement Jaxx, Crookers, Major Lazer, Modeselektor, Steve Aoki, Danger, Destructo, Deadmau5, 2 Many DJs, A-Trak, The Bloody Beetroots, Don Rimini, Mixhell, Harvard Bass, Staccato, Justice, Buraka Som Sistema, Shinichi Osawa, Zombie Nation, Classixx, and more!

The final event is HARD New Years Eve at the Palladium in Los Angeles on December 31st. Boys Noize is heading the event. I couldn’t find a list of other artists so be sure to check hardfest.com frequently for more info.  ~ tom

Sawtooth Electronic Music Mix 01

sawtooth-mix01Since we typically review new music at Sawtooth, I wanted to honor some electronic music of the past with occasional Sawtooth mixes. This first mix is a collection of tracks from the past 15 years encompassing trip-hop, breaks, electro, ambient, tech-house, industrial, downtempo, future jazz, glitch, post-punk, trance and some mixed styles. Among these selections are some tracks that I feel never got the credit they deserved such as FFWD and the Nine Inch Nails remix track “The Downward Spiral (The Bottom),” which was remixed by members of Coil—an experimental industrial group who helped shape the genre. The remixes on Further Down the Spiral include some of the best remixes I’ve ever heard. If you’re only familiar with the major NIN releases, you’re in for a surprise. They’re incredible works of sound manipulation, dynamics and composition. FFWD was an ambient supergroup made up of Thomas Fehlmann (Sun Electric), Robert Fripp, and Kris Weston & Dr. Alex Paterson of The Orb. This 1994 release was their only collaboration. Another highlight is Funki Porcini’s “16 Megatons.” This track comes from Fast Asleep, which is my all-time favorite downtempo album.

If you like any particular styles, leave a comment and I’ll do my best to incorporate more of it in my future posts. I’d like to get more reader participation on Sawtooth so if there’s something you’d like to see us do differently, please share. Enjoy the tunes!  ~ tom

Fukkk Offf’s Love Me Hate Me Kiss Me Kill Me

fukkk-offf-love-me-hate-me-kiss-me-kill-meI first heard Fukkk Offf from a post on blip.fm a few months ago. No artist was listed—just the title “I’m A Freak Remix.” It was a hard electro house track with attitude. Luckily, after reposting a few times, I found out the artist. This German DJ/Producer, Bastian Heerhorst, has been releasing singles since 2007 with Hammarskjöld and Coco Machete Records. His first full-length, Love Me Hate Me Kiss Me Kill Me, is a non-stop headbanger which has already started killing the dance floors throughout Europe. The album’s full of addictive melodies, pounding beats, gritty synths, and trance-like arpeggiations.

To hear more Fukkk Offf, check out his Monosurround, DJ Dan, Sidechains, Maral Salmassi and Suicide Club remixes. They’re all sick tracks with a ton of energy. If you live near Germany, you can catch Fukkk Offf at a few clubs this August. See his MySpace page for more details.

Burial and Four Tet’s Possible Collaboration

We’re seeing a lot of great collaborations this year. The latest may be from the innovative producers Burial and Four Tet. I’m saying “may be” because the release has been such a well-kept secret that no one really knows if it’s a collaboration or if it’s just a split release. Either way, I’m really diggin’ it. The a-side, “Moth,” is a beautiful 9 minute minimal tune. Although it’s extremely repetitive, I could listen to it for hours. The b-side, “Wolf Club,” sounds as if Four Tet had a heavier hand in it. It’s a choppy tech-house track with Asian influences. It’s a bit on the long side, but still a very cool tune. I actually like these tracks better than Burial’s and Four Tet’s solo tracks. Maybe Will Bevan and Kieran Hebden should become a permanent duo. Thoughts?
